The processes that have always distinguished the construction planning activities within and in relation to a territory, originate and evolve from an objective knowledge of the relationship existing amongst the elements generated by the territory (natural and artificial: stones and their primitive by-products such as lime, terra-cotta etc.) and its cultural and socio-economic structure. The starting point to obtain that knowledge is the typological study of construction, meaning determining the materials, the building techniques, the architectural shapes that characterize the buildings of a specific territory.
Many examples of contemporary architecture are proof of the strong trend to use so-called local and/or traditional materials (in other words, linked to the tradition of the building) and of how the forms closely resemble the area’s architectural language.

The traditional building envelope served as a support and also as a spatial boundary for the dwelling space. The gradual process of technical evolution has led to a functional stratification of the building envelope.
The specialization of building layers, materials, technologies and the practical development of research in the field of Technical Physics are elements that suggest THE VENTILATED FACADE as the new solution as cladding layer for the building frame. Additionally, dry erection, using aluminium structures, has made the external cladding of a building a much more flexible element as far as the work and maintenance demands and obligations of the building as a unit are concerned.
