Designing the structure of a ventilated facade can be compared to designing the structures of a building unit. Just as the load-bearing structures adapt to forms and functions, our structures are designed and calculated to comply with the formal and functional requirements of the project.
The facade of the New Macerata Seminary was conceived by its designer as using cladding panels in fired brick base modules of 30x40 cm, with intervals of Ascoli travertine beam base modules of 90x45 cm. Additionally, the architectural project as a whole distinguishes between different functional areas; on the facades corresponding to such areas a whole series of differently shaped openings can be found. In short, objective requirements and architectural obligations led to precise structural planning.

 The project of creating the ventilated facade for the New Macerata Seminary was divided into the following stages:
1. Design of the facade modules. These studies were used to define the table for both the fired brick and the travertine panels (for this work 9 different types of fired brick panels were industrially manufactured, and approximately 47 different types of travertine panels were created);
2. Design of the support structure for facade panels. These studies were made to determine the different  stages and connections between the mountings and the wall structure underneath
3. Design of critical details. These studies were made to resolve specific facade issues, like the curved area, the most articulated areas, windowsill abutments and extension jambs of all the openings;
4. Static structural tests, Performed according to general scientific and technical building criteria, in reference to the following regulations:
 •   Structural load-bearing hypothesis, D.M. 16/01/1996;
 •   DIN 4113  German regulations regarding aluminium buildings;
 •   DIN 18516  German regulations regarding ventilated facades.
The kind of structure used in creating the ventilated facade of the New Macerata Seminary is called “ALI-Q”,  and is comprised of the following components:
• U-shaped beams and omega profiles. Aluminium alloy P-AlMgSi products, hardness F25 according to UNI 3569, compliant with EU regulations regarding structural components. The beams are the elements that anchor the structure to the wall by means of plugs. The profiles, fastened to the beams with rivets, support the weight of the cladding.
• Hooks and spreaders. Stainless steel products, they are fastened by rivets into grooves on the profiles and they directly hold the cladding panels.
