At ALIVA S.r.l., we have felt the need to overcome the ventilated facade’s design limitations, which prevent free expression of new and futuristic technological trends. For this purpose we have developed and perfected advanced structures and fastening systems that allow us to realise works of significant architectural prestige.
For the restoration and extension of the La Scala Theatre in Milan, ALIVA created the external cladding of the two new features designed by Architect Mario Botta: the scenic tower (covered by a ventilated facade) and the elliptical body (covered by sunbreak panels).
The knowledge and experience of the firm have allowed for the development of the original design concept, overcoming technical and intrinsic limitations of the material chosen for the cladding: Botticino marble.
For the scenic tower’s ventilated facade, ALIVA designed a specific anchorage system, ALI-STONE, which has an aluminium alloy substructure capable of holding, with utmost safety, very thick slabs of Botticino marble. A unique and innovative construction system made it possible to reduce contact tensions between the tiles and the structure itself to a minimum. Eight hundred and fifty points of light were inserted into the total 5000 square meters of surface: a charming starlit sky, designed by Architect Botta, which uses fibre optic stars nestling in specially designed slots.
For the sunbreak panels of the elliptical body, ALIVA designed large modules (3 m x 3 m) weighing 2 tonnes, preassembled and carefully inspected on the ground in an area far from the Theatre. The modules were then loaded onto special trucks and transported during the night to la Scala, where they were erected according to an extremely unique and detailed plan.

The new Alla Scala Theatre is the result of an enormous collective effort by architects, engineers, technicians and workers. Almost four hundred persons walked into the building site daily, lending their creativity and manual labour to the ambitious project of restoring and expanding, within two years and two months, the most famous opera house in the world. Aliva could not work at this challenge without passion, without implementing the design and manufacturing capabilities that have made us a landmark firm for reliability and expertise, in Italy and throughout the world.
