Environmental certification is a voluntary arrangement of self-regulation and accountability that can be adopted by companies, organisations and institutions in general that wish to implement a process of continuous improvement of their environmental performance.

Companies wishing to obtain ISO 14001 certification of their Environmental Management System must:
- define an Environmental Policy that sets objectives and commitments for the continuous improvement of its (direct and indirect) environmental performance;
- make plans for identifying the environmental aspects of the business activities that require monitoring;
- set up the environmental management system (roles, responsibilities and authority);
- introduce monitoring procedures;
- carry out audits, that is, a systematic, periodic, documented and objective evaluation of the performance of the organisation, the environmental management system and the processes set up to protect the environment;
- aim always to improve its environmental performance including through the active participation of employees, suppliers and customers.
By obtaining this certification Aliva has committed itself, not only to comply with the relevant provisions of the law, but also to improve its performance and transparency to the outside world, reducing diseconomies and increasing internal efficiency.

ISO 14001 defines an Environmental Management System as a "part of the management system that includes the organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy".
Compliance with these standards is required to obtain the internationally recognized ISO 14001 certification, i.e. certification that is recognized by the ISO certification body and its European (EN) and Italian (UNI) counterparts.
